The electric locking system operates on the principle of a closed circuit. The electrical door locking system consists of a locking element (surface magnet, escape door closer, latch lock, etc.), a control unit (e.g. GfS Door Terminal, GfS FWS 02), an unlocking element (e.g. GfS e-Bar®, GfS Door Terminal, GfS SMARTterminal PUR, PRAXIS, PLUS or simple emergency switch) and an operating element (door handle, panic bar, etc.) in accordance with EN13637. When the release element is operated, the locking element is de-energised and unlocked.
The GfS Door Terminal (with integrated control unit, siren, flashing light and emergency switch) must be installed near the door or on the door leaf. The height of 1200 mm must not be exceeded during installation. The recommended optimum height is 850 mm, so that children and wheelchair users can also reach the switch.
The surface mount magnet is mounted on the door frame or in the passageway, the hold-down counter plate on the door leaf. When mounted, the clear passage height must not be less than 2 metres. Surface-mounted magnets are easy to install and can also be retrofitted to existing doors (surface mounting). No adjustments or recesses need to be made in the door frames. This statement is not applicable when retrofitting fire-resistant closures with smoke-resistant properties.
According to a letter dated 1 December 2009 from the Institute for Building Technology (Berlin), electromagnets can only be retrofitted to fire protection closers with the approval of the door manufacturer. In these cases, the safety door closer with integrated electric locking element may be an option.
